Dixie Alley And Tornado Alley
Missouri is located in a part of the U.S. called Dixie Alley. Dixie Alley is a part of the U.S. where many tornadoes happen each year. Within Dixie Alley, there is Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee. Tornado Alley is another location in the U.S. where multiple tornadoes happen each year. Tornado Alley is located in the southern plains of the central U.S. so the area would include Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas, eastern Dakota, eastern Colorado, Iowa and central Texas. The majority of America's current tornadoes happens within these two areas and same within the past. Tornadoes that occur in Dixie Alley happen in late fall (October to December) and in early spring. Tornadoes that occur in Tornado Alley happen in late spring and early fall. Out of the two areas though, the most deadliest tornadoes in history have happened in Dixie Alley.
Tornadoes In Missouri
The earliest tornado recorded in Missouri’s history was on April 18th, 1880 when a tornado hit Marshfield, Missouri. This tornado killed about 90 people, 150 lost their homes and damage property costs were in between $120,000 and $350,000.The deadliest tornado that hit Missouri and has been the most deadliest tornado in our country's history was the Tri-State Tornado that hit Southeastern Missouri, Southern Illinois and Southeast Indiana on March 18th, 1925. It was an F5 tornado and had had winds of over 300 miles per hour. Within only three and a half hours of spinning, the massive tornado killed 695 people, injured 2,027 people and destroyed 15,000 homes. The most recent tornado that happened in Missouri was another F5 tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri on May 22nd, 2011. This tornado had wind speeds ranging from 166 miles to 200 miles per hour and ended up killing 116 people, making this tornado the single most deadliest in American history.
